Film Director Norah Shapiro will lead a discussion following the CineCulture showing of “Time for Ilhan” at 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 1, in the Peters Education Center Auditorium. In 2016, a young, hijab-wearing mother-of-three named Ilhan Omar made history, becoming the first Somali Muslim woman to be elected to a state office in America.
“Time for Ilhan” chronicles her hard-fought campaign for state representative in Minnesota, home to the nation’s largest Somali community. Two years later Omar became the first Somali-American to be elected to the United States Congress. The screening is sponsored by Center for Creativity and the Arts, Kamal and Aimee Abu-Shamsieh, Muslim Spiritual Care Services and the Department of Political Science.
Parking is free after 4 p.m. on Fridays. CineCulture is a film series provided as a service to Fresno State students, faculty and staff, and the community.
