UPDATE – May 29 (1:30 p.m.): More #FresnoStateCorn harvested and delivered to Farm Market so corn still available today, possibly through most of the afternoon, until supplies run out. Sales also resume at 7 a.m. Sat.
NOTE -May 29 (7 a.m.): The farm market manager advises that for the first few days of sales, the corn supply may be sold out by 10 or 11 a.m. each day. Check back for updates.
Fresno State’s campus-grown sweet corn will be available at the Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market starting at 8 a.m. Friday, May 29.
Yellow and white sweet varieties will be sold throughout the summer with supplies expected to move fast daily, said Nina Palomino, Gibson Farm Market manager. The first few days, shoppers will be welcomed inside the store in groups of about 10 with lines formed outside to help alleviate crowded conditions.
An organic, bi-color variety will be available in August.
“This is an exciting time of year for the Gibson Farm Market and our student employees,” Palomino said. “The sweet corn has helped increase exposure across the state and even nationally about the amazing products produced right here at Fresno State. We look forward to seeing new faces and hope to continue to see them year-round.”
Sweet corn will again be sold at three ears for 99 cents, or 33 cents per ear.
In 2014, nearly 624,000 ears were sold at the Gibson Farm Market, including 9,900 the first day when 22 bins of sweet corn were sold out within 90 minutes.
Sweet corn is among 20 enterprises sponsored by the Jordan College of Agricultural Science and Technology on its 1,000-acre campus farm — the University Farm Laboratory — that also includes crop, dairy, fruit, horticulture, livestock, meat and wine units that grow, process and package products.
More than $1 million in products are sold each year at the farm market and most are produced with the help of 130 student employees and 80 class sections that use the University agricultural laboratory to give students hands-on experience. Other products include wine, meat, ice cream, almonds, salsa, syrups and the new Woofle waffle mix.
“As we enter our third year at our new facility, business couldn’t be better,” said Joseph Rodrigues, a student employee. “We appreciate all of the support from our campus and our community.”
The market is located at 5368 N. Chestnut Ave. in the 2,500-foot expanded facility that was opened in 2013, thanks to a $1.5 million dollar bequest from the estate of Joyce Mae Gibson.
Also coming up is the Gibson Farm Market’s 9th Annual Fresno State Farm Festival on Saturday, July 11. The event will feature corn and other summer products with free samples in the morning and a wine tasting in the afternoon.
The market’s summer hours are 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.
