Fresno State President John D. Welty was recently honored with two awards for his philanthropic leadership during his tenure at the university.

The local Association of Fundraising Professionals named President Welty as a 2012 National Philanthropy Day Honoree, receiving the distinguished Special Award for Philanthropic Leadership.

National Philanthropy Day is an annual celebration hosted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals during which local nonprofits honor their volunteers, benefactors and staff for service to the community.

President Welty was also recognized by The Business Journal as part of its 20th anniversary celebration. A reception was held on November 8 to honor “Central Valley Legends,” the newspaper’s list of the 20 most influential local business people of the last 20 years.

Honorees were chosen through nominations made by the business community based on the following criteria:

  • A professional or business owner who advanced the economic well-being of the Central Valley
  • Community involvement and outreach
  • Someone who currently does business or is engaged in the local community
  • Someone who has represented the Valley well on the national and global stage.
