Fresno State fall wine tastings begin Sept. 4 with awards presentation

The Fresno State Winery will resume its Thursday and Friday afternoon wine tastings at the Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market on Sept. 4, with a presentation of awards won during the 2007-08 academic year and samples of some of the award winners.

Wines produced by California State University, Fresno enology students won 32 medals in competitions, including three Best of Class medals at the California State Fair and four gold medals won at the San Joaquin Valley Winemakers Warm Weather Wine Competition.

Among the gold medal winners are Fresno State’s 2004 Petite Sirah and the 2006 California Tempranillo, which will be released after the awards presentation set for 4:30 p.m.
The weekly tasting sessions are held from 4 to 6 p.m.

Also available Sept. 4 and 5 will be the 2006 Viognier and 2006 Merlot. Wine tasting during September and October will include various award-winning wines.

Proceeds from student-produced food products benefit agriculture programs at Fresno State.

Wine tasters must be 21 years or older to taste and purchase wine.

The cost for tasting is $5 per person, which includes a commemorative Fresno State Winery glass and three tastes of the featured wines. Customers also may bring back their Fresno State Winery wine glass for a $1 discount at future Gibson Farm Market wine tastings.
