Health Policy Leadership Program seeks participants

Applications are available for the 2007-08 Health Policy Leadership Program offered by the Central Valley Health Policy Institute at California State University, Fresno.

The program’s participants will meet each of the 10 months beginning in May to learn about a broad range of major health and healthcare challenges facing the region, the state and the nation. They also will develop strong leadership skills to be effective advocates for the San Joaquin Valley in the statewide policy debate on healthcare and leaders in addressing regional health and healthcare challenges.

The program is looking for participants with experience in local government, healthcare, community organizations, advocacy groups, public health, education, business and the media. Participants will work together on group projects to create health policy solutions tailored to their own communities and interests. During the last session, participants will present the findings and recommendations.

Dr. John Capitman, executive director of the Institute, will facilitate the program, which began in 2005. He is nationally renowned for his work with health disparities, long-term care, substance abuse and racial and ethnic disparities in cancer care.

“The Valley, with its growing population, diversity and severe economic challenges, has a healthy system that is failing to meet the needs of many in the region,” said Capitman. “Our leadership program is dedicated to empowering individuals and groups in the region with the knowledge and skills necessary to make real progress in meeting our Valley’s health and health care needs.”

Applications will be accepted through 5 p.m. March 31 to participate in the Health Policy Leadership Program that begins May 11. Approximately 30 individuals will be chosen to participate.

The program is funded by The California Endowment.
