Bulldog Marching Band stops in Bakersfield Friday enroute to USC
The Bulldog Marching Band will sound out an action-packed weekend for the USC game Saturday. On Friday, the 240-member band departs the campus at noon for Southern California and will make a special stop in Bakersfield to perform at Centennial High School (8601 Hageman).

More than 50 schools in the south Valley have been invited to watch the band as it rehearses for an exhibition performance it will do on Saturday morning at the Western Band Association Prelims in Long Beach.

The Bakersfield exhibition, from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., is partly a recruitment effort for the band.

Saturday morning, the band will perform a 15-minute exhibition at the WBA Prelims – Gangsta Jazz Show. At 5:15 p.m. the entire band will perform in full uniform at the Red Wave Tailgate at Jesse Brewer Park across from the Los Angeles Coliseum.

After the tailgate Saturday afternoon, the band will send a 60-member USC game squad in full uniform into the Coliseum for the Bulldogs contest against the Trojans. Following the game, the band will return to Fresno.

For those wanting to complete the Saturday Red Wave invasion of Los Angeles, the band is also selling its 2004 CD. It is available for a $10 donation at the Bulldog Shoppe, the Farm Market and the Marching Band office. Proceeds underwrite production costs for the annual CD which is used for recruiting.

Divided Loyalties

For twelve Fresno State professors, Saturday’s game brings on mixed emotions as they have at least one of their degrees from USC. Six of them hold degrees from both universities. For interviews, contact Tom Uribes.

The Red Wave Bus Invasion

The Fresno State Athletic Department partnered with FAN-tastic Sports for several football travel packages. David Hauser reports that they sold out at 200 seat packages.  About five buses will leave from Fresno State at the Blue Lot on the south side of Bulldog Stadium in the morning and drop them off at the Westin Bonaventure hotel to check-in and rest before the heading for tailgates.  After the game, the buses will drive them back to the hotel for the night before departing the next morning for the trip back to Fresno.  Media contact: 480.283.4509.

Another bus venture headed by longtime booster Tim Schiller will have 17 buses rambling down Hwy 99 over the Grapevine to do their part in the big game. Schiller has 850 fans booked with four buses as overnighters.  About 600 of these have bought tickets for the Alumni Assn. tailgate. Schiller ‘s buses depart from Lot Q (Barstow Ave. just east of Cedar) around 9 or 10 a.m. and arrive at Coliseum around 4 p.m. for tailgating. Some of his buses stop in Visalia and Bakersfield to pick South Valley Red Wavers. Media contact: 225-3164.

Wild weekend: from Trojans to Rolling Stones

Why stay in Los Angeles after the game when you can come back for some world class entertainment right here in Fresno on Sunday (Nov. 20) when the Rolling Stones perform at the Save Mart Center. But like the Trojan-Bulldogs game, the Rolling Stones concert is sold out. For those with tickets to both, will it be the perfect capper to a momentous weekend?
